by Curt Hinson, Ph.D.

Dr. Curt Hinson’s Physical Education workshop, Moving Bodies & Developing Minds, is an interactive and dynamic experience that provides participants with actual games, activities and teaching strategies they can implement immediately into their physical education curriculum. Participants in this workshop will learn dozens and dozens of hands-on games and activities for teaching fitness, manipulative skills, motor skills and social/emotional skills. This workshop includes: quick warm-up activities; fitness circuits; aerobic activities; cooperative games; sport lead-up games; motor skill tasks; motivational techniques; and more. In addition, participants will learn cognitive and affective learning activities that will increase problem-solving, critical thinking, creative thinking, as well as social/emotional development. Curt’s workshop is filled with fun, easy-to-implement games and activities to help offer success to all children, regardless of ability. Participants will walk away with a variety of activities they can go back and use the very next day! And, as thousands of teachers around the country have already learned, Curt’s motivational ideas and techniques help motivate every type of student.

The Moving Bodies & Developing Minds workshop is divided into three different parts:

  • FUN-ctional Fitness: A Moving Experience
  • Play With Your Brain: Developing Thinking Skills Through Movement
  • G.A.M.E.S: Games & Activities to Make Everyone Successful

Below is a description of what participants will learn in each section.

FUN-ctional Fitness: A Moving Experience

This part of the workshop includes hands-on games and activities for teaching various fitness components such as: aerobic endurance; flexibility; and muscular strength & endurance. Participants learn how to intrinsically motivate students to move and participate, as well as how to develop self-responsibility toward fitness. Most of the activities presented can be done in small or large groups and involve students in social/emotional skills such as cooperation, communication, and problem-solving.

Play With Your Brain: Developing Thinking Skills Through Movement

This part of the workshop includes hands-on games and activities for teaching a variety of manipulative and motor skills. Participants learn various brain-compatible cooperative games that focus on cognitive and affective learning, helping students to problem-solve, think critically and use their creativity. Many of the activities presented are adaptable and can be used in a partner, small-group, or large-group format.

G.A.M.E.S: Games & Activities to Make Everyone Successful This part of the workshop includes hands-on games and activities focused on sport lead-up skills and motor skill development. Participants learn various sport-centered games that use competition to enhance cooperation, not hinder it. The activities include partner, small-group and large group games.
